Degraded landscapes significantly impact the ecological, economic, and social well-being of a region. Therefore, initiatives to restore landscapes not only contribute to environmental health but also unlock new opportunities, financial capital, and enhanced security for communities. Our landscape restoration tool leverages satellite imagery and advanced technology to monitor and quantify landscape changes over time, providing critical insights for those working on ecological restoration. We deploy this tool in collaboration with humanitarian partners, enabling them to effectively track and assess the progress of their landscape restoration efforts.

Challenge - problem statement

Globally, land quality is deteriorating, diminishing its capacity to provide essential ecosystem services for human survival. Land degradation is a prolonged loss of ecosystem function and services due to disturbances that the system cannot recover from on its own (UNEP, 2007).

It is estimated that 1.5 billion people worldwide are directly affected by land degradation (UNCCD, 2013). Extreme climatic events, land use changes, deforestation among others are increasing the need for landscape restoration.

Restoring degraded land generates numerous benefits for people, nature, and business, and dozens of national governments have made commitments to restoration as part of global and regional initiatives, including the New York Declaration on Forests, the Bonn Challenge, Initiative 20x20, AFR100, and ECCA30.

Red Cross National Societies work on restoration activities within their chronic crisis programs to support sustainable livelihoods.

Need

Restoration of landscapes can contribute towards improved food security, poverty alleviation as well as promote water, human health and biodiversity conservation. Halting and reversing degradation as well as restoring landscapes can result in hundreds of millions of hectares restored to a productive state.

In the context of Red Cross national societies and partners national societies, engaging in restoration initiatives enhances the resilience of communities exposed to food insecurity and disaster risk.

Solution

Increased availability and access to high-resolution satellite imagery has allowed for the ability to examine and analyze large landscapes in higher detail. The high-resolution imagery plus advanced satellite technologies can be leveraged to monitor landscape restoration initiatives.

Land Restoration Tool

A landscape restoration tool has been developed by 510 to support NS’s and PNS’s in the monitoring of restoration activities. The tool is adapted from an existing GIS software to monitor the green mass implemented in an area based on a set of identified indicators on the national/regional level available for any tree coverage/planting activity.

Benefits of using the landscape restoration tool

The landscape restoration tool is a useful decision support tool that can be deployed by NS and PNS’ in their identification of areas requiring interventions and prioritization of areas to implement restoration initiatives as well as monitoring the success of the restoration initiatives. The tool offers benefits such as:

  1. Large scale monitoring: Use of the tool allows for large-scale detection of deforestation and reforestation in real-time resulting in the identification of changes in tree cover that would otherwise be undetected using traditional observational methods.
  2. Spatial visualization: The tool, which uses high-resolution satellite images, provides visual data that can be used by NS and PNS’ to pinpoint specific locations and extent of forest loss or gain.
  3. Cost-effectiveness: The tool uses free and openly sourced software Google earth engine and its split app functionality. In addition to this, the use of satellite monitoring provides cost advantages compared to labor intensive onsite inspections.
  4. Accessibility & Sustainability: The tool makes use of indicators that are tailored to the local context and NS’s are trained on the deployment of the tool for the monitoring of their restoration initiatives. Satellite data can also be accessed remotely, making it easier for stakeholders around the world to collaborate and make informed decisions.
  5. Decision support: The landscape restoration tool provides insights into changes that have occurred over time allowing for historical comparisons and also assessment of the effectiveness of restoration efforts.

Application

The landscape restoration tool has been applied in Jacmel district, Haiti. Haiti is in a persistent socio-political crisis resulting in an increasing vulnerability of the population. The application of the tool is aimed at enhancing the resilience of communities exposed to food insecurity and disaster risk in the Southeast Region, Jacmel district. Specifically, watershed management is required. Due to the steep slopes and lack of vegetative cover, the basin is exposed to high erosion and surface water run-off that can put communities at risk. A current intervention by the Haitian red cross is a reforestation program, but the benefits of this program needs to be monitored with a digital (satellite imagery based) tool

Methodology

Landscape restoration monitoring involves four steps:

  1. Problem analysis:Together with the NS, identify the challenges the communities are facing with regards to landscape degradation and ecosystem loss. Based on this, formulate the objective of the restoration monitoring and identify the region of interest.
  2. Indicator definition: Identify the relevant indicators based on the local context.
  3. Data processing, analysis and visualization: Load and process available satellite imagery for the area of interest. Overlay the satellite images with shapefiles of areas that are undergoing reforestation. Create a graph that calculates the vegetation index per reforestation area, and the difference between compared dates.
  4. Decision support: Provide insights into the improvements in landscape restoration over time and support NS with evaluating the effectiveness of their restoration interventions.
